The three-way agreement targets initial Direct Air Capture deployment at the Mwangea project, scaling toward tens of kilotonnes of captured CO₂ annually for synthetic fuel production.

AMSTERDAM – October 22, 2026 — Skytree, Galetech Energy Developments, and Mwahera Green Hydrogen have announced a strategic partnership to integrate Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology into the Mwangea e-Fuels Project in Kenya.

Signed on October 21th, the agreement establishes a framework to capture atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) directly on-site, pairing it with green hydrogen to produce carbon-neutral e-fuels.

The Mwangea initiative will pioneer atmospheric carbon utilization in East Africa, beginning with an initial deployment phase. Following technical and commercial performance verification, the facility will scale progressively toward capturing up to tens of kilotonnes of atmospheric CO₂ per year.

Unlocking commercial Power-to-X in East Africa

Synthetic e-fuels are emerging as an essential solution for decarbonizing heavy transport sectors, such as aviation, maritime, and long-haul shipping, where battery electrification is technically or economically unfeasible. By synthesizing green hydrogen with atmospheric CO₂ captured via DAC technology, the Mwangea project can create a circular, sustainable fuel that drops directly into existing engine infrastructure without requiring fossil feedstocks.

The integration of DAC into the Mwangea project addresses two central challenges in the global transition to synthetic fuels, which are securing a fossil-free carbon feedstock and lowering energy inputs. By capturing CO₂ directly from ambient air rather than relying on industrial point-source emissions, the project creates a truly circular carbon loop, where burning the final e-fuel does not release any new carbon into the atmosphere. Furthermore, deploying DAC in Kenya leverages the country’s abundant renewable energy, where over 80% of grid electricity is generated from geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar.

"Securing off-take agreements with global airlines and fuel suppliers requires 100% verifiable carbon accounting from day one. Integrating Skytree’s DAC technology into the Mwangea process eliminates reliance on industrial flue gas and volatile CO₂ supply chains, giving our customers total confidence in the fuel's origin and climate performance.”

— Michael Bermingham (Head of e-Fuel developments at Galetech)

"The Mwangea project transforms Kenya’s renewable energy advantage into a high-value export commodity for global markets. By co-locating Direct Air Capture with local hydrogen production, we are building a self-sustaining infrastructure model that retains value in the regional economy while helping hard-to-decarbonize industries meet strict international mandates.”

— Dr Kenneth Namunje (Director Mwahera Green Hydrogen Ltd )

Strategic alignment and project roles

Under the terms of the agreement, each party brings specialized capabilities across the green hydrogen and e-fuels value chain.

  • Skytree provides its proprietary DAC system, engineering expertise, and project-integration support to ensure high availability, energy efficiency, and optimal CO₂ output quality.

  • Galetech Energy Developments leads overall project development, permitting, stakeholder engagement, and the engineering integration of DAC systems into the broader e-fuels synthesis plant.

  • Mwahera Green Hydrogen serves as the primary project company for the Mwangea e-Fuels initiative, managing regional development operations and site execution.

"The CO₂ in our atmosphere can become a valuable feedstock for the fuels of the future, rather than a problem we leave behind. Deploying DAC in high-yield renewable energy markets like Kenya is the ultimate proof point for our modular technology. By capturing atmospheric CO₂ right where clean energy is generated, we can supply predictable, scalable carbon feedstock at the cost profile required to make synthetic fuels a commercial reality worldwide."

— Peter van Hooft (VP Project Development EMEA)

About Skytree

Skytree engineers the CO₂ transition by developing Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology that captures CO₂ from the air and repurposes it for good: whether carbon is reused across different industries or stored permanently.

With over a decade of innovation rooted in the European Space Agency (ESA), Skytree's patented DAC technology transforms atmospheric CO₂ into a valuable resource: powering applications like renewable fuels and chemicals, greenhouses, beverage carbonation, food packaging and water treatment.

Skytree’s modular DAC machines and unique Skypark concept allow companies to deploy in any climate, at scale - offering a bankable path to CO₂ supply security and price stability, and accelerating the transition to a circular CO₂ economy.
