Public crowdfunding campaign
Greenhouse growers rely on CO₂ to boost crop yields. They are facing severe supply shortages as natural gas phases out, carbon taxes rise, and carbon storage initiatives cut fossil CO₂ supply. Skytree builds technology that captures CO₂ directly from ambient air and delivers it on site. Pre-registration for our crowdfunding campaign is now live on Republic Europe. Sign up below.
Why this, Why Now
Dutch greenhouse horticulture currently uses around 2.6 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. According to industry body Glastuinbouw Nederland, 2 million tonnes of this must come from sustainable sources by 2030 (Wageningen University & Research, 2025). Yet, current projections reveal a critical supply gap: an anticipated annual shortfall of 0.8 to 1.4 million tonnes of sustainable CO₂.
This gap is structural.
As growers decarbonize, the CO₂ from their on-site gas heating systems disappears. At the same time, the industries that traditionally supply CO₂ need to cut their emissions and are sending their CO₂ to permanent storage instead of reuse (Shell, 2026). Skytree closes this gap: our systems give growers a reliable, on-site supply of sustainable CO₂, independent of volatile CO₂ markets.
Skytree is a spin-off from the European Space Agency, where our founders developed CO₂ air-capture technology to keep astronauts breathing. Twelve years of engineering later, Skytree will supply CO₂ to greenhouses in the Netherlands and to a German research centre making synthetic aviation fuel. In 2025, Skytree's technology won the GreenTech Innovation Award.
Shareholders including Horticoop, Iconic Ventures, The Yield Lab, family offices, private investors, and Skytree's management and employees have invested €50 million in Skytree so far.
Our flagship system at Skypark Arnhem-Nijmegen, a joint venture with Lingezegen Energy, is under construction and expected to commission in the fourth quarter of 2026, serving ten greenhouses with circular CO₂.
€80 million of SDE++ subsidy has been awarded to growers specifically to switch to CO₂ supplied by Skytree, covering the cost gap with current fossil sources for 15 years. The demand behind our order book is underwritten by Dutch policy.
